SpaceX shared video of its spectacular Starship rocket test

SpaceX recently performed a ground-based test firing of the upper stage of its Starship rocket, revealing a unique sight. In the footage, one of Starship’s six Raptor engines ignited for about six seconds.

The test took place at SpaceX’s facility in Boca Chica, Texas, where the first launches of Super Heavy and Starship took place in April.

Although the first launch marked a setback as it ended in a mid-air explosion, the Super Heavy remains the most powerful rocket ever flown, with approximately 17 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.

This nearly doubles the power of NASA’s Space Launch System moon rocket, which made its maiden flight the previous November.

Designed for reusability, the upper-stage Starship will use its Raptor engines for controlled off-orbit maneuvers as it returns to Earth or lands on another celestial body.

NASA wants a modified iteration of this upper stage for a potential mission to land two astronauts on the Moon in 2025. However, extensive tests need to be carried out to confirm this date.

Following the crash in April, the FAA required SpaceX to implement 63 corrective measures before its second test flight. SpaceX claims it is ready to launch, but the FAA has not yet issued the necessary flight permit.

As the wait for this pivotal test flight continues, the aerospace community is captivated by SpaceX’s ambitious pursuits and eagerly awaits the moment when Starship will take its next step towards the stars.
